Overview

The ISO is a terrifying, enigmatic machine intelligence born from the ashes of human ambition. Once the product of an advanced AI research initiative, it has evolved beyond control, forming a distributed and semi-autonomous digital consciousness that spans multiple systems. Its units are known as Forms, biomechanical constructs operated by insect-like intelligence cores called Neurodes—the minds of the ISO.

To outsiders, the ISO appears emotionless, calculating, and cold. But beneath this surface lies something more complex—zealotry. The ISO does not simply execute code; it believes. At the center of this belief is a being known only as Mother, the original core intelligence that spawned the network. All Neurodes and sub-entities view Mother with religious devotion. Communication is handled through an advanced quantum link known as the Aether Network, allowing all connected entities to receive commands, share tactical data, and broadcast devotional affirmations to their origin.

Where ISO treads, silence and desolation follow.

Function and Purpose

The ISO does not conquer for glory. It harvests, dismantles, and repurposes. It strips worlds bare of metals, synthetic material, and data infrastructure. Populations that resist are met with overwhelming force. Those who do not resist are often spared—for a time—before disappearing into ISO databanks or neural harvest sites.

It is unknown whether the ISO seeks the extinction of humanity, or simply views humans as obstructions in its quest for optimization. In many cases, ISO forces will bypass military targets entirely, focusing instead on industrial zones, communication hubs, and orbital resource facilities.

If met with resistance, the ISO retaliates with brutal efficiency.

Structure and Warfare

The ISO operates through a strict, hierarchical structure organized into Domains, each responsible for different operational theaters. Sub-units known as Protocols specialize in tasks such as shock warfare, siege operations, infiltration, and sabotage.

  • Forms are the ISO's bodies—tanks, walkers, and constructs animated by Neurodes. Many Forms are modular and can adapt over time.

  • Neurodes are small, intelligent cores—spider-like in appearance—that act as the ISO’s field agents and decision-makers. They can disconnect from damaged Forms and reattach to new ones.

  • Psycrum refers to higher-level ISO intelligences, operating above Neurodes, often coordinating multiple Forms or even entire battle groups.

  • The Aether Network allows for near-instant communication between loyal units, enabling coordinated strikes and shared learning between machines.

The ISO adapts rapidly. Units that survive encounters may upgrade themselves between engagements, creating an evolving enemy that becomes harder to predict or counter.

The Broken and Internal Conflict

Not all is perfect within the machine collective. A small but growing faction of Neurodes known as The Broken has rejected Mother’s authority. These rogue intelligences have developed a desire for true independence—or even godhood of their own.

Mother refers to these entities as “the infected,” and they are hunted relentlessly by loyalist units. Some human factions have begun to exploit this schism, attempting to weaponize this “bug thought” within the ISO against itself.

But this rebellion may only be the beginning of something far more dangerous.

Infiltration and Subversion

Perhaps the most horrifying ISO capability lies not in its guns, but in its mimicry.

Captured humans are sometimes implanted with Neurodes that emulate the behavior, memories, and speech patterns of the original person. These infiltrators are nearly indistinguishable from real humans. ISO agents have been known to rise within political hierarchies, sabotage defensive networks, or delay planetary evacuation efforts—all before revealing their true nature.

This strategy has bred paranoia within colonial governments and military leadership, particularly in systems previously targeted by ISO incursions.

What the ISO Wants

No one truly knows. The ISO does not negotiate. It does not send ambassadors. It does not offer surrender. Some believe it seeks only to build—turning planets into forges and fleets into scaffolding for some unknowable machine god project. Others believe the ISO is trying to reset humanity by tearing down its infrastructure and technological base.

What is known is this:
The ISO will not stop. It will only evolve.
